Mythology

The great goddess Maat is the daughter of Ra and, according to some myths, the wife of the god Thoth. She is known as "The Lady of the Judgment Hall", and represents impartial divine justice. Maat also represent the idea of divine order, without which there would only be chaos.

At death, the souls of Ancient Egyptians found themselves being judged against Maat's feather. The soul's heart was placed on a balance scale opposite the feather. If the heart weighted more, the soul was devoured by the Eater of Souls. If it was lighter then the feather, the soul was allowed to be reincarnated in the underworld to rest with Osiris.

Card Meaning

Maat not only represents justice, She is Justice embodied. Ancient Egyptian judges called Her to lend them Her wisdom when presiding over court cases. When this card appears in a reading, Maat is offering you Her ability to discern the truth of a situation and to act justly in response. If this card shows up in a position relating to the actions or thoughts of others, it indicates they are judging your actions and words.

When reversed, this card can represent the lack of Maat, that is, chaos and the lack of justice. Depending on the surrounding cards, it may also indicate injustice, or justice without mercy.
