Mythology

Hecate is the daughter of two Titans, Tartaros and Night. (Other traditions give Her parents as Perses and Asteria.) Worship of Her began in Anatolia, among the Carians, and spread to Thrace and later to the whole of the Greek world. She is the Queen of night spirits and patroness of witchcraft. She is also one of the faces of the Triple Goddess, representing the Crone and the waning moon.

In one version of the Demeter/Kore myth, it is Hecate that either tells Demeter that Hades holds Kore in the underworld, or helps Demeter to recover Kore.

Card Meaning

Hecate is the goddess of witchcraft, prophecy, wisdom and transformation. She guards Her knowledge carefully, but is willing to help those who know how to seek Her out. When this card appears in a reading, Hecate is inviting you to make use of Her knowledge. She is willing to provide spiritual guidance, but you will need to make an effort to understand it.

When reversed, this card indicates that you are refusing to listen to either your own wisdom or that of others who are offering to help (and really do know what they are taking about). You are displaying immaturity, the worst aspect of the Crone face of the Triple Goddess.
