Older, but Not Wiser
I'm sure I'm not the only one who remembers the childhood/rock saying "Never trust anyone over 30." So, what do you do when you reach 30? This is a dilemma I am now faced with, because I turned 30 yesterday.
Okay, hardly anyone lives their life based on such maxims, but it still gives one pause. When you are little, 30 is old! Your parents are 30, their friends are 30, your teachers are even older then 30. And then you get older, and 30 is still old, but not quite as old. In your 20's, 30 looms large, but still seems so far away. And then one day (for me a lovely spring day, but no less painful for that), you are 30. Ouch.
There is one nice thing about getting older: instead of getting Barbie dolls as gifts, I'm now getting Chanel No.5 and emerald earrings. That certainly eases the pain of a few gray hairs.

I remember hitting 30. I hit 30 in 1999.
I also remember when the Prince song came out "1999" back when I was 13 or 14 and realizing that I would be 30 on that momentous New Year's Eve and how very OLD that seemed.
I have to admit that I am looking ahead to turning 40 (in a mere 2 years) with a good mdeal of trepidation

I was startled and shocked when I hit 30. And then I told myself forcefully that it was just a number and I was still only one day older than yesterday. That didn't make a difference.
But the truth is, I'm loving the 30s. They're not much different than the 20s, except I feel more like a grown-up. (I'd better watch out, illusions like that are dangerous!![[smiley face]](/blog/img/smilies/smile.gif)
I hope you find your 30s are blessed. The gifts are, as you note, definitely better.
