Celebrity Gods

What with all the buzz surrounding the Oscars and other awards shows, I’ve been thinking a lot about celebrities, while doing my best to avoid any and all celebrity related news. But I’ve been thinking that perhaps we are replacing the myths, heroes and gods of old religions with movies and movie stars.

When you stop to think about it, it isn’t too hard to associate certain celebrities with deities. Take Marilyn Monroe, she clearly can be seen as Aphrodite/Venus; and for some reason, I associate Elizabeth Taylor with Hera. And then there are the characters created in movies and on TV, like Jack of Will and Grace, who is very much a gay Pan figure.

I wonder if generations from now people will look back and study our celebrity culture the way we study ancient myths.
